Tips and pep-talk on making your application to university.

Applying to university is an exciting process, but it can also be daunting. The best favour you can do yourself as you begin is to choose confidence. It really can be as simple as reading carefully, thinking critically, and being yourself.

The basics are simple: provide all the information required in a clear and concise manner. Beyond that, don't allow confusion or uncertainty to frighten you into feeling incapable – look things up by perusing the university website for clues and information.

Similarly, if you are asked to include a specific area of study next to your degree program, and you don't know what you want to do yet, write “general” and do it boldly! Whatever you do, write with conviction.

Your application is the university's way of finding out if you would be a good fit for their institution. So this is your chance to make a great first impression! Don't be afraid to sell yourself: there is a difference between bragging, and confidently stating your strengths and accomplishments.

Be honest about yourself. Be forthright about your interests and intentions. Especially, be enthusiastic and ready to engage.

This is also where your references come in. Think about how you want the readers of your application to see you, and then choose people in your life who can personally affirm that impression.

Choose people who know about your work ethic, your academic skill, your personal values, and your community engagement. A teacher is always a good choice, and so is a boss. In any case, always pick someone with a legitimate job title.

And remember, if your university does interviews or requires an essay, these are just further opportunities to show them why you would make a valuable contributor to their community. Put your best foot forward, proofread meticulously, and back up your statements. You can do this!
